The Deadliest Conflict You Never Heard About: The Taiping Rebellion

During the mid-1800s, being an citizen of Qing Dynasty (modern day China) probably meant you were destined to live a life of struggle and attrition. A series of natural disasters, economic problems, prevalence of female-infanticide and numerous military defeats against Western powers had lowered moral, quality of life and faith in the reigning Qing government. A large portion of the Chinese population, who were mainly Han Chinese, harbored negative attitudes towards the ruling Qing government (who were predominantly Manchu). Anti-Machu sentiment was strongest in the southern regions of China; the majority of these citizens viewed the Qing rulers as ineffective and corrupt, foreign tyrants. These conditions set the stage for one of the world’s most deadly and peculiar conflicts… The Taiping Rebellion.

It’s Saturday night; I’ve had a little bit to drink, not too much though. I’m feeling pretty good about myself, suppressing whatever anxieties may have been distressing me over the last little while. I’m with good friends at my place enjoying each other’s company. We’re going to see an awesome band play a show at a dive club just a few minutes from my flat. I’m initially hesitant to go out because I’m feeling a little dreary, tired and overall unenthused about the prospects of the night, short of sitting on my couch and getting caught up on some episodes of my favourite television shows. However, there I was with my friends, slightly intoxicated and going to see a concert.

An emergency bulletin appears on the TV…

“Attention, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has advised that all citizens stay inside their homes. Close your windows and lock your doors. Please stay tuned for further update.”

But the “further update” is never sent and there isn’t any sign of help coming soon. The zombie apocalypse has started and it’s time to defend yourself and your party against the undead.

We indulge in crime for a number of reasons: lust, hate, revenge…. but most of all we do it for money. Generally, the procurement of a lucrative crime is merely the first step in the criminal ‘racket’ process. Now the criminal must “clean” their currency – and this is where crime can get even more interesting.

If I were to tell you that I watch a TV show about chauvinist alpha-males drinking, smoking, and committing adultery, with beautiful women who willingly oppress themselves, all while the entire cast dresses in some of the most fashionable clothes on television, you would likely make a few assumptions.

Ask any university undergraduate student what their biggest issue with post secondary education (PSE) is, and you may get a range of answers; teaching quality, lack of new technologies, the cost of books.  But chances are, if asked, undergrads will say this: the biggest problem with PSE is rising tuition.
